It was just another Wednesday. Nothing special about it.
The girls came to sleep at my place, the way they do every Wednesday now. It went fine. No big meltdown, no extra whining, no tears that meant anything. Just the normal amount of chaos two little kids drag through the door at the end of a school day.
And that, somehow, is the whole point.
Nothing happened. That's the win.
For a long time, every handoff carried weight. Every overnight felt like a test I might fail. You brace for the crying, for the "I want Mommy," for the little fight that turns into both of them coming apart on the floor. You get so used to bracing that you forget what it feels like when the night is just a night.
Almost five months in, this is starting to become the actual normal. The girls come over, we do the routine, they go down, they wake up happy, and nobody is keeping score.
I won't pretend I'm happy about the shape of it. Divorce sucks. Breaking up a family sucks. I don't think there's a version of me that ever fully stops wishing it had gone another way. But for the first time in months, I can honestly say things are getting back to normal.
Whatever the hell that means.
Maybe that's all normal ever was. Not the absence of the hard stuff, just the day the hard stuff finally sits down and lets you have an ordinary Wednesday.
